BlackBird: NYC Center For Music And Dance
NoHo, New York, NY
UK/COD Fall:13
Professor: Akari Takebayashi
This building investigates concealing, revealing, and transformation through a series of pinches and folds along a regular grid. The studies led to the creation of a tessellated surface. The use of the tessellated surfaces and reflective glass creates connections back to the city as the facade begins to reflect back and transform views of the city surrounding. The structural system works to frame views out into the city as well as back into the building. The Structural system and the exterior form become more regular as they move upward, al- lowing the tower to blend back into the city, offer views to the surrounding buildings, and reflect the patterns in the sky.
On the interior a series of regular columns define the interior spaces. This regular gird juxtaposed to the ir- regular exterior creates a dynamic contrast from the exterior to the interior. The grid of the columns also re- lates back to the grid of the city streets below. Through the use of tesselation and meshes of exterior struc- ture conceal and framing ceratin views of the building, transforms not only the building but the city around it by creating new perspectives through reflection.

Church Of Baptism
Santa Marinella, Italy
UK/COD Summer:14
Professor: Mark O'Bryan
The Church of Baptism is based off a study of the inversion of negative space found in stained glass windows in chartres cathedral. By breaking the window into a basic pattern and inverting the negative spaces between the panels new spatial conditions emerge. This inversion of negative space along with the use of a column system which blurs the lines between building and bridge. The use of hidden light sources often found in churches in Europe. The hidden light sources connect with the sea and the sky the connection between heaven and earth. The Facade of the building in a simple angled mir- rored facade which allows the mass of the build- ing to blend into the surroundings by reflecting the waters. The use of the ocean for baptism allows visitors to travel first to the water and then into the building cleansing themselves before en- tering a holy space, an act practiced in many reli- gions. The act of cleansing is also related to the simplicity of the interior created with simple ge- ometries inverted inside a rectangle.
